Three years later after arriving in Philadephia, the Schneiders are settled in Windsor, Colorado. If they took the railroad to get to Colorado from Philadelphia, they would have gone through either Chicago or Kansas City and then arrived in Denver. The ship later would later sink on when it was attacked by a German submarine during WWI. The ship was built in 1901 in Glasgow, Scotland by John Brown & Co. The four Schneiders made their way to Liverpool, England where they bought tickets aboard the "Merion" that would take them to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Had they stayed, Konrad would have been conscripted to fight in World War I in 1914 for the Russian army. Another piece of information that was discovered in research was that the Russian government was expecting men in the Volga region to join the Russian army. We can assume that they heard from Conrad Kraft about life in Windsor, Colorado and decided that it was worth it to move halfway around the world. Why they decided to move to America can be explained further down in this narrative after the section about the 1930 census. In the ship records, they stated their destination as Windsor, Colorado where Emilia's brother, Conrad Kraft lived. Emelia was 24 and Konrad was 23.Ī year after Fred was born, the Schneiders left Oberdorf forever and moved to America. Three years later, Mary welcomed a brother, Friedrich (Fred) C. Emelia was 21 years old and Konrad was 20.

In 1902, Emelia's brother, Konrad Kraft and his wife Katherine Schneider, left Oberdorf for America, Colorado to be specific, with their two young children, Henry (1) and Katherine (infant). The picture below of Konrad and Emelia was taken sometime in the 1950's in Colorado when my dad went to visit as a little boy. Konrad and Emelia married on Octowhen they were 19 and 20 years old. They were exempt from serving in the Russian army and were allowed to maintain their Germany culture, language, traditions, and churches. Oberdorf was a German Lutheran colony founded in 1852.Ī little history - In the 18th century, Catherine the Great, ruler of Russia, invited Europeans to farm Russian lands in the Volga region. Emelia Kraft was 11 months older, born on Octoin Oberdorf, Russia. Now lets go back to the earliest Schneiders that we know of on record. KONRAD SCHNEIDER and EMELIA KRAFT IN OBERDORF, RUSSIA My dad spent many summers at her home in Capitola, just blocks from the beach, and loved eating her strawberry shortcakes. As an adult, she moved to California where she spent the rest of her life. She grew up in Colorado and South Dakota. She was born there in 1903 and immigrated to America when she was four years old. My dad’s maternal grandmother, Maria Schneider (or "Mary" as she was later called) was born in a small Russian German village called Oberdorf, which was located in the Volga region of Russia. Unlike all of my other ancestors, they came after the turn of the century – 1907 to be exact. In my family tree, the Schneiders are the most recent ancestors to have emigrated to America.
